Honda Launches Civic Si Giveaway for College Students

Honda is launching the Civic “Study Break” promotion, which includes the chance to win a 2012 Civic Si coupe. The campaign is aimed at college students, though anyone can enter the contest by visiting the Honda Civic Facebook page.

Once there, visitors can find a link to enter the contest, which ends on May 31. The lucky winner will be announced shortly after. The rest of you who want your own Civic will, unfortunately, have to tack it on to your student debt (or beg mommy and daddy?).

The “Study Break” tour also includes visits to a handful of west coast college campuses where Honda will give students a chance to check out and learn more about the Civic. The tour starts on April 21 at the Arizona State University campus and will make its way through the University of Arizona (April 28), University of Southern California (May 3), University of California, Los Angeles (May 5), Stanford University (May 10), and University of California, Berkeley (May 12).

Audi Debuts A3 e-tron Plug-in Hybrid Concept in Shanghai

Audi joins the brace of planet-saving car debuts at the Shanghai Motor Show with the A3 e-tron concept, a plug-in hybrid wrapped in the crisp sheet metal of the next-generation A3 sedan. Like the Chevrolet Volt, the A3 e-tron can be charged at night so that drivers can travel moderate distances without using the gasoline engine.

The gasoline half of the powertrain is a 1.4-liter TFSI four-cylinder — direct-injected and turbocharged — rated 211 horsepower. It’s coupled to a 27-horsepower electric motor, with the charge stored in a 12 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack located behind the rear seats. Audi says the e-tron can travel up to 34 miles on electricity alone. The gasoline engine only kicks in to provide extra range or additional acceleration.

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG to be Fitted with New Turbo V8

AMG’s new twin-turbo 5.5-liter engine may soon trickle down to the E63, according to a recent report by German magazine Auto Bild. Horsepower could be rated at 518, but an available performance package should increase that to 549 horsepower. The twin-turbo engine has been gradually replacing the 6.2-liter normally aspirated V-8 across the AMG lineup, and it appears the E63 is next in line.

These horsepower numbers are lower than the 2012 CLS63 AMG fitted with the new turbo eight that we tested earlier this year, which is rated at 525 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque; the performance package bumps it up to 557 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Auto Bild’s report didn’t include torque numbers, but we estimated an increase of 51 lb-ft of torque on the base E63 AMG and up to 125 lb-ft on the E63 with a performance package, since the E63 has always closely mirrored the CLS63’s output.

2013 Infiniti JX Crossover Previewed by sketch

new three-row crossover called the JX.
Previewed by this sketch, it will go on sale in
spring 2012 as a 2013 model.
The JX was styled in keeping with Infiniti’s
current design language, which explains the
sinusoidal creases and bulging fenders seen in
the sketch. It has a swept-back, aerodynamic
profile, with darkened B- and C-pillars making
for a “floating roof” appearance. The D-pillar
bears the same reverse-kink shape that we saw
on the Essence and Etherea concept cars. We
also expect the JX’s front end will resemble
those concepts, with narrow headlights and a
small chrome-trimmed grille.

Droptop: Audi Releases 2011 R8 Spyder 4.2 Quattro Specifications

According to Audi, the R8 4.2 Spyder will do 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds, 0.4 seconds behind the R8 4.2 coupe, thanks to the added weight of the folding roof mechanism. As with the coupe, the Spyder can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed, single-clutch R-tronic automatic transmission.

Audi's signature Quattro all-wheel-drive is standard and features a 15/85 front/rear torque split. A total of 30 percent of the R8's power can be sent to the front wheels, should the rear wheels lose traction. A locking rear differential further increases the car's handling prowess.

Hidden in the R8 4.2 Spyder's specifications is a revelation: Despite the added weight, it's actually more fuel-efficient than the coupe, thanks to the Spyder's standard regenerative braking. According to Audi, manual transmission Spyders return 16 U.S. mpg combined, and 17 U.S. mpg combined for the R-tronic, versus 15 U.S. mpg combined for both transmissions in the coupe.

Audi's new R8 Spyder 4.2 rolls into European showrooms in the third-quarter of 2010 at a price of €121,000 ($148,500), about €35,400 ($43,400) less than the 5.2 Spyder. U.S. on sale dates and pricing have yet to be announced.

Note: The pictures are of an Audi R8 Spyder 5.2, as 4.2 images have yet to be released. The largest differences are the wheels, and four round exhaust tips of the V-8 coupe, rather than the two ovals of the V-10 model.

Aston Martin Prices the Revised 2011 DB9, V8 Vantage N420 for the U.S.

Now that we've gotten a good look at Aston Martin's revised 2011 DB9 lineup and new race-inspired V8 Vantage N420, the automaker has released U.S. pricing for the two swanky models.

The 2011 DB9 coupe will start at $187,615, while the drop-top Volante will run $201,115. Exterior updates for the 2011 DB9 include a new front and rear fascia, headlamp bezels, a reshaped hood, clear taillights, and newly designed 20-inch wheels. Aluminum trim graces the inside, as does an upgraded Bluetooth system, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo is now an optional upgrade. The Adaptive Damping System, standard on the DBS and Rapide, is now standard on the DB9.

Pricing for the 2011 Vantage N420 came in much lower than estimated, with the coupe retailing for $132,000 and roadster starting at $145,000. Aston Martin's race-team-derived N420 pushes out the same power as the V8 Vantage it's based upon, but that's where the bulk of the similarities end. A sport suspension, new exhaust, and 59 pounds of weight savings comprise the performance-enhancing upgrades. Exterior upgrades include a carbon-fiber front splitter, ten-spoke wheels, and the option of race-inspired paint hues. On the inside, sill plates, carbon-fiber seats, graphite instruments, and a steering wheel covered in either leather or Alcantara are available.

Deliveries of the DB9 and Volante are scheduled to commence this fall, and the N420 will make its first U.S. appearance at next month's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, with deliveries scheduled to start late this year.

Zero Percent Financing Available on 2009 and 2010 Lamborghini Murciélagos

Tis the season to buy a Murciélago with zero-percent financing. Lamborghini of America introduced a new Lamborghini Retail Finance Plan that allows customers to buy a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640-4 at zero percent for 60 months.

With the new financing deal, Lamborghini hopes to allow more automotive enthusiasts to get behind the wheel of one of the rarest and fastest cars on the plant. Purchasing a car that has a base price of more than $350,000 normally requires some serious wealth. Now, all it requires is a solid credit score, although we’d still recommend a serious amount of wealth behind your name.

Through the Lamborghini Retail Financing Plan, Lamborghini customers with a credit score over 700 can finance their LP640-4 purchase for 12 years at 5.9% APR with 10 percent down. To give you an idea of how astronomical the payments are on a bare bones Murciélago LP640-4 with a pricetag of $354,000, this roughly equates to $35,000 down with payments of $3096 per month for 12 years. After 12 years, interest payments alone amount to an astounding $126,824.

For those with a more significant income and a credit score of over 740, Lamborghini is also offering zero percent financing for 60 months with a larger down payment. Assuming a 25-percent down payment ($87,500) a monthly payment through this financing plan would be approximately $4400 a month for 5 years. Once again, this assumes you’re picking up an LP640-4 with no options. Ordering a car to your tastes can push that price point over the $450,000 mark.

The new Lamborghini Retail Financing Plan is offered at select Lamborghini dealerships across the country and is available on all 2009 and 2010 Lamborghini Murciélago models.

2010 Toyota Sai Unveiled Before Tokyo Motor Show

Shortly after our post on the Toyota Sai went live, Toyota released the full batch of photos and information on the production car.

As has been reported, the Sai is Toyota's version of the Lexus HS 250h, and it's aimed at consumers shopping for a hybrid who would prefer something larger than a Prius. We see plenty of Prius styling cues in the front and rear fascias, although the car's general profile and stature differ little from the Lexus.

Also cloned from the Lexus are the mechanicals. The Sai uses the same 2.4-liter I-4, also mated to Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system. When it comes to fuel economy, we imagine the Sai will mirror the HS, which is EPA rated at 35/34 mpg (city/highway).

Although the Sai goes on sale in Japan come December, Toyota has no plans on exporting the car to North America.

Customized Suzuki Kizashis to Hit SEMA

Suzuki's quite proud of its new Kizashi sedan, so it's not too surprising that the automaker is bringing several tuned examples to the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

True to its name, Road Race Motorsports transformed one Kizashi into a race-prepped car that looks ready for a few laps at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The front and rear fascias have been replaced with more aerodynamic pieces, while suspension and brakes have been fully reworked to improve the Kizashi's already impressive handling traits.

Delta Tech took a bit of a different route with its Suzuki. The company specializes in vehicle lighting, and steered its Kizashi toward visual enhancements. A full body kit, custom interior, and LED lighting enhancements throughout have the Delta Tech Kizashi ready for the show floor.

The West Side Group focused on keeping the Kizashi luxurious, although it added design elements cribbed from Suzuki's Hayabusa motorcycle. A custom paint job and shaved door handles help keep the car's lines smooth, while a custom Yoshimura exhaust system borrowed from the 'Busa lurks out back.

Import Tuner magazine also had the chance to put its touch on the Kizashi. No part of the Suzuki went untouched: power enhancements, exterior upgrades, and a full suspension rework has made its way onto the Kizashi.

Overfinch Creates Holland & Holland Range Rover

It’s hard to think of the Range Rover as anything but a luxury SUV, but for those who want the utmost in comfort, performance, and firearms storage, you’ll be hard-pressed to trump the new Overfinch Holland & Holland Range Rover.

Overfinch, a British tuning firm that exclusively works its magic on the Range Rover portfolio, partnered with hallowed gun maker Holland & Holland to create one exorbitant sport-utility. Overfinch adds its traditional body kit on the exterior, but Holland & Holland has its way with the cabin. Walnut trim, similar to that used on H&H rifles, runs rampant. It is perhaps most notable in the cargo area, where it is liberally applied to a locking gun cabinet.

Although no firearms are included in the purchase, several glass tumblers are -- a good thing, considering the rear bench seat has been eschewed in favor of two buckets and a large liquor cabinet. Overfinch prides itself on the fact that it comes stocked from the factory with single malt whisky, single batch gin, vodka, and champagne, and complementary refills will be provided within the first year of ownership.

Only 100 examples will be built, and luckily enough, they will be available to customers in North America -- although they’ll have to live without the option of a diesel engine and the factory-stocked cocktail cabinet…

General Motors Volt Chief Frank Weber Headed to Opel

Frank Weber, General Motor's head of electric vehicle development and father figure to the Chevrolet Volt, announced he will be leaving GM on December 1 for a senior leadership position at Opel.

Weber, a German native who previously spent time on Opel's engineering staff, came stateside in 2007 to spearhead development of the Volt. Weber leaves GM one year before the public launch of the highly anticipated Chevrolet. Weber will be replaced by Doug Park, who currently leads GM's global compact car development.

Details surrounding Weber's new position are unknown, but it wouldn't be surprising if he were to help spearhead development of the Ampera -- Opel's version of the Volt -- while safeguarding design ideas from Magna, Opel's new suitor.

2009 Audi Q7 Review

The Audi Q7 offers strength and refinement in a large, luxurious SUV. It is a paragon of driving elegance and interior refinement.

For 2009, a new 3.0-liter diesel engine is available, a turbocharged dohc V6 with four valves per cylinder. It makes 325 horsepower at 3750 rpm and a very robust 406 pound-feet of torque at 1750 rpm. It is matched with the same six-speed automatic used with the 4.2-liter V8 but, in consideration of its torque curve, has a numerically lower axle ratio of 3.27:1. Not only does it deliver a lot of torque, it also has remarkable fuel economy, and is EPA-rated at 17 mpg City, 25 mpg Highway. The diesel is known as the Q7 TDI and is said to be the world's cleanest diesel sport utility vehicle. It meets emissions regulations in all 50 states, and offers 600 miles of driving range on a single tank.

In addition to the availability of the diesel, for 2009 there are some slight alterations to the trim levels and options. Otherwise, the 2009 Q7 line is unchanged. The Q7 was launched as a 2007 model.

The Audi Q7 shares its solid architecture with the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. The Q7 rides on a longer wheelbase, however, and it has a more compliant ride than the Volkswagen and Porsche. The Q7 is the longest of the three, and is the only one to offer three-row seating. To make its cabin more luxurious and inviting, Audi has equipped the Q7 with features not found on the Touareg or Cayenne. And when the weather turns sour, the Q7 benefits from Audi's decades of experience with quattro all-wheel drive.

With a base price of considerably less than $50,000, the Q7 is priced close to others in the luxury SUV segment, which includes the Cadillac SRX, Lexus GX 470, and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. With all-wheel drive, a choice of three powerful engines and the classiest interior in the segment, the Q7 deserves serious consideration when shopping for a luxury SUV. High-technology features such as its blind-spot warning system add to safety and convenience in the Q7.

The Luxurious Hyundai Tucson 2008

The Hyundai Tucson is the Korean automaker's smallest, entry-level SUV. Its most obvious competitor is the Honda CR-V. Like the CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson is strictly a five-seater, with no third-row-seating option. Both come standard with a four-cylinder engine, although the Tucson offers a V6, and the Honda does not.

We found the Tucson to be comfortable around town and on the highway, with light steering, adequate power from the V6, and a smooth four-speed automatic transmission.

The interior is nice: It doesn't look cheap, and the controls are easy to operate with big knobs. It's easy to get in and out of the front and back seats, and the rear seatbacks flip down easily. There's a decent amount of cargo space available.

We like its looks. It's nicely proportioned, with clean lines and short overhangs front and rear. Like Hyundai's slightly larger Santa Fe, the Tucson is a crossover rather than a truck-based SUV, built with unit-body construction, all-independent suspension, and a transversely mounted engine.

That said, we actually preferred the ride and handling of the four-wheel-drive Tucson models, even on dry pavement. On wet pavement, 4WD Tucsons don't spin their front tires the way the front-drive models do when accelerating from a stop. In snow, they benefit from an all-wheel-drive system that directs power to the rear wheels as road conditions change. A switch allows the driver to lock in a 50/50 torque split when creeping through drifting snow. Though not intended to be a highly capable off-road vehicle, the Tucson can certainly manage rocky dirt two-tracks and other light off-highway duties.

For the 2008 model year, Hyundai has made a six-disc CD changer standard with Limited trim, and replaced the gray leather interior with black. Late-production 2008 Tucson models come standard with XM Satellite Radio (including three months of free service), an auxiliary audio input jack, active front head restraints, and a tire-pressure monitor. A four-cylinder version of the top-trim Limited is also available.

Hyundais are becoming known for outstanding quality and safety. The J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study named Tucson the industry's highest quality all-new model when it was launched in 2005; and rated it highest in initial quality in the compact multi-activity vehicle segment in 2006.

A comprehensive list of active and passive safety features are standard equipment, including six airbags and electronic stability control. Tucson is aggressively priced and it comes with Hyundai's five-year/60,000-mile warranty. Tucson earned a five-star safety rating from the U.S. government (NHTSA) in front and side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which conducts crash tests differently than the government, has rated the Tucson quot;Acceptablequot; in its frontal offset and side-impact crash tests. Their system rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal or poor.

2009 BMW X6 Review

So called crossover SUVs are becoming more like cars and the BMW X6 pushed this idea further with the X6. BMW calls it a Sports Activity Coupe. The BMW X6 is a high-riding, four-passenger, four-door coupe, a combination of sports car and SUV.

The X6 is offered in two twin-turbocharged models, with inline-6 or V8 power. Both engines provide ample power for everyday use and even for towing. The V8 makes the X6 a hot rod, but we recommend the inline-6 because it has plenty of pep and is more fuel efficient. Shifter paddles on the steering wheel add to the sporty character of the X6.

We found the X6 handles well on the road and on the track. It's better than any SUV but not as good as BMW's own sporty coupes and sport roadsters. It corners with little body lean, but the stiff suspension makes the ride somewhat harsh, especially with the Sport Package and optional 20-inch wheels. We recommend buyers test these options before they buy.

Inside, the ambience is upscale, with lots of leather and soft-touch surfaces. BMW's iDrive control system is standard. It can complicate some interior controls, but programmable buttons are provided to ease control of some of your favorite functions.

Front-seat passengers have plenty of room, though visibility to the rear is restricted by a small, flat rear window. Two rear-seat occupants should be comfortable, too, provided they're not tall.

The rear hatch lifts up and the rear seat folds down to give the X6 a nice amount of cargo storage space. It's on par with other hatchbacks but isn't as good as an SUV. Also, the liftover is higher, so you'll have to lift cargo higher when loading.

The X6 was all-new for 2008, and only minor changes in equipment have been made for 2009: A power liftgate has been added to the Premium Package, and the Cold Weather Package now comes with heated seats for everyone, not just the front-seat passengers.

It's hard to pigeonhole the X6. It rides high, so it doesn't handle as well as a sport coupe, and it doesn't have the cargo and people carrying capacity of an SUV. Overall, it's a fine vehicle. Pricing is high, especially for the V8 model, so we recommend the six-cylinder model for anyone considering this vehicle.

The 2009 BMW X6 is offered in two models, both with xDrive all-wheel drive. The X6 xDrive35i uses BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that makes 300 horsepower. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled manually via the shifter or a pair of steering wheel paddles. xDrive is meant for street use and lacks low-range gearing.

The Amazing BMW X5 2009

The BMW X5's calling card isn't off-road capability or cargo capacity. It's driving dynamics. This sport-utility isn't quite as refined or holistic as BMW's best sedans, but the comparison is generally on the mark. Think of the X5 as a 5 Series sedan with more headroom and a bit more cargo space.

For 2009, BMW X5 gets some changes in nomenclature that has no bearing on the vehicles themselves. All three X5 models officially add xDrive to the name, reflecting the marketing label for BMW's fulltime all-wheel drive system, which was already standard equipment. For example, the entry model is now called the BMW X5 xDrive30i, while the V8 model is called the xDrive48i. Hey, don't blame us, we are merely the messengers here.

More significant is introduction of the X5 xDrive35d, with a slick new diesel engine that's as clean as any of its gasoline counterparts. The diesel improves mileage nearly 25 percent compared to the six-cylinder X5 xDrive30i, yet it accelerates more quickly and tows more. This is the same diesel engine offered in the 2009 BMW 3 Series sport sedan, but we like this engine more in the X5.

The X5 emphasizes the sport half of the sport-utility equation, even with the diesel engine. While it offers more utility than ever, it comes up short in cargo-passenger flexibility compared to many luxury SUVs. As opposed to hauling acres of equipment and gear, the X5 provides the equipment enthusiast drivers expect when they want to enjoy the art of driving as much as they're able. Just plan to travel light.

All three X5 engines deliver plenty of usable torque for good acceleration. The gasoline engines also feature turbine-like smoothness. The 4.8-liter V8 in the xDrive48i is the chest-beater, but the inline six-cylinder in the xDrive30i still delivers the kind of response we expect in a sports sedan, and it shouldn't leave owners pining for the V8.

The X5 is styled in obvious BMW fashion, only taller, with traditional Bimmer cues like the twin-kidney grille and dual-beam headlight clusters. Inside, it offers plenty of room for five, with a nice, rich finish and nearly all the bells and whistles one expects in a high-line luxury sedan. The back seat is more than roomy enough for two adults, three in a pinch, and there's enough cargo space in back for a two-day family outing. The X5 can expand to seven-passenger capacity with an optional third-row seat, but that third seat won't look particularly inviting to anyone asked to ride in it, and it wipes out the cargo space.

The X5 is not a traditional SUV. BMW shuns the SUV tag entirely, describing the X5 with it own copyrighted label: Sport Activity Vehicle, or SAV. With all seats lowered for maximum cargo capacity, it offers less space than do most competitors, from Acura to Volvo. The gas-powered models aren't class leaders in fuel economy. And Sport in the X5 context does not mean off-road capability. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system was developed for slippery roads and sporty driving characteristics rather than sand dunes and rutted hillsides. Indeed, the X5's strength is its ability to get down the road in the step-on-the gas, shove-through-corners fashion of a genuine sports sedan.

Yet the X5 can tow a substantial 6,000 pounds, and the all-wheel-drive can be a great friend in a blizzard. Those sound like the credentials of an SUV.

The X5 gets high marks for safety. It performs well in both government and insurance industry crash tests, and it has been designated one of the Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 AWD Cabriolet

Porsche has been refining, redesigning and updating the basic shape of the 911 sports car for more than 40 years, with versions such as the removable-roof Targa, the cabriolet (convertible), the four-wheel-drive 4S, the awesome Turbo, and high-performance versions called GT2 and GT3. The engine has gone from a VW-based four-cylinder opposed air-cooled engine in the first 911 to a Porsche-designed, liquid-cooled six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged in some models, but always nestled behind the rear window.

The 2008 Porsche 911 GT2 is the latest model added to the 911 model range, already the broadest ever offered. The addition of the GT2 marks the third time the 911 has been offered in GT2 form.

The 2008 GT2 is the quickest and fastest Porsche 911 ever built, capable of 0-60 mph acceleration times under 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph.

It also offers race-car agility. But the most amazing thing is there's no down side (other than the price, of course). It's quite easy to live with this car and it could even be a daily driver. That's in a car with performance that would have been competitive at Le Mans not too long ago.

Unlike some other models, like the GT3, which is intended for and homologated for, track racing, the 911 GT2 is a completely equipped, luxury-laden road car that just happens to be lighter, quicker, faster and more agile than the other 911 models.

In essence, the GT2 is a slightly stripped-down 911 Turbo with more power, lightweight components and without all-wheel drive. Its closest competitors in price would be a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera or an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, both of which it can outrun easily. The GT2 costs a less than the Ferrari F430 and the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.

The 911 GT2 comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter flat six that generates 530 horsepower, 50 hp more than the Turbo, with 505 pound-feet of torque available from just above idle to 4500 rpm, making it extremely flexible and willing in any of its six gears. It gets the extra 50 hp by using its two turbochargers with a very clever new intake system. While most other 911 models are offered with a choice of transmissions, the GT2 is manual only.

2010 Mazda Mazdaspeed 3

There's one thing missing in love-it-or-hate-it cars like the Mazdaspeed 3: apathy. Whether you adore its tire-shredding, blistering acceleration or loathe its torque steer and turbo lag, you'll never get out of this hatchback feeling nothing. Redesigned for 2010, the Mazdaspeed 3 remains the muscle car of the hot-hatch world, and just like the last Speed, it remains the ultimate polarizer of the Mazda family.

For example, one could easily criticize the new Speed for offering no more power than last year's car. We won't. Word behind the scenes is that engineers experimented with more power (the engine will reportedly handle 300 hp with no problem) and even all-wheel drive, but the lessons of the late RX-7 stopped that thinking dead in its tracks. The RX-7 became too complex and too expensive, resulting in its demise. Demise is bad, so the Mazdaspeed 3 stays simple, cheap, and fast.

And that means it remains a hot hatch with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine furiously spinning the front wheels. When the Porsche Cayenne was launched four years ago enthusiasts cried blasphemy. Porsche should not build sport-utilities, they said, Porsche should build sports cars. But buyers won the vote. Cayenne had what they needed in a five-passenger SUV: more cargo space than a sedan, off-highway capability, and impressive towing capacity.. They found the Cayenne technologically advanced and remarkably fast, as Porsches are supposed to be. So, they wondered, why all the hand wringing?

Cayenne's balance of style, performance, and sport-utility virtues were compelling, and it quickly became a success story for the small manufacturer of legendary sports cars. When Porsche launched Cayenne as a 2003 model, executives said they hoped to sell 20,000 of the SUVs a year. Clearly, these projections were conservative. Last year, Porsche sold more than 50,000 Cayennes. More than 150,000 have been sold in the past four years. Now, redesigned for 2008, sales of the new version have taken off, and overall Porsche sales in the U.S. hit record levels the summer of 2007. The Cayenne has been a boon for Porsche's financial planning. Its ongoing success smoothes over wildly fluctuating sports car sales, which tend to follow the consumer confidence index. Cayenne's success is helping Porsche do what enthusiasts want: develop and build great sports cars. Enough hand-wringing already.

For 2008, the Porsche Cayenne has been significantly improved, and Porsche is calling it a second-generation version. We can report the driving dynamics of the 2008 Cayenne models are substantially improved over the high bar set by the previous models. This was accomplished by using the latest technology and high-quality engineering and manufacturing. Porsche Stability Management has been enhanced, Dynamic Chassis Control is available, and there's a new Sport mode available for all models and powertrains.

2008 Ford Escape

Coursing over humpback hills and cutting acute-angled corners to chase the ragged shore, this twisty asphalt strip seems like it was designed expressly to show off the road-hugging agility and sticky tire traction of Escape, Ford's crossover utility vehicle for the compact class.

Formatted with the two-box body of a four-door wagon, Escape rides on the chassis of a front-wheel-drive (FWD) car rather than a conventional wagon's rear-wheel-drive (RWD) truck platform.

A generous wheelbase length of 103.1 inches and a broad wheel track set up a long and wide foundation for stability when turning.

And, unlike some wagons with a solid rear truck axle and crude leaf springs, Escape carries four-wheel independent suspension components -- MacPherson struts in front and a double lateral and semi-trailing arm design in back -- which bring more control over the vehicle for a driver and more comfortable ride sensations for passengers.

As a result, Escape offers the easy-to-drive manners of a nice sedan.

More equipment goes into the 2008 editions of Ford's CUV.

The new gear includes EPAS -- electric power assist steering -- through a direct rack and pinion system. The all-electric device eliminates a conventional hydraulic apparatus along with the power losses of an engine-driven pneumatic pump.

It fine-tunes the overall steering feel but also boosts fuel economy scores.

Escape's issues of 2008 show more upscale appointments in the five-seat cabin, like an information display mounted on top of the dashboard and easy-on-the-eyes Ice Blue lighting washing instruments, console, steering wheel and door switches.

A new console set between the two front bucket seats holds two stow bins which may be extracted and mounted on the right and rear rims of the console to increase storage spots.

Bucket seats account for the first row, while a bench on the second row provides space for three with a backrest that splits and folds down to enlarge the cargo area, and that back bay with rear gate access has more useful room because a spare tire tucks beneath the deck.

Designers managed to drop the cabin floor but still maintain a reasonable chassis height for ground clearance. As a result, you don't have to hike up to climb aboard, but simply slip in sideways like you would enter a sedan.

Styling for the body of Escape is also new to forge a bolder, tougher look in a chiseled design with a sloping and stepped front hood, a high beltline and big wheels and tires as emphasized by flared wheel arches. The blunt new fascia up front contains restyled headlamp clusters which sweep up toward front corners and a fresh grille squared off at the center front with the finish in materials that vary with trim designation.

At the rear Escape's taillamps carry a clear band wrapping around corners and the big bumper has an integrated step pad for easy access to the roof deck when loading gear.

2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is a convertible version of the Phantom VI sedan. In 2008, a new coupe version of the Phantom also debuted.

Features include a rear trunk gate that flips down for what Rolls-Royce calls "picnic" seating — the world's priciest tailgate party, perhaps? — and a camera mounted up front for better parking visibility.

New for 2009
There are no significant changes.

Exterior
Iconic Rolls-Royce elements include a descending beltline (in contrast to most convertibles, whose lines typically ascend toward the tail), as well as a short front and an enormous rear overhang.

Up front, the grille and hood have a softer profile than that of the hard-nosed Phantom sedan. The doors are hinged at the rear, which is sure to make for a show every time they're opened. Exterior dimensions — at 220.8 inches long and 78.2 inches wide — are about the same as the Phantom sedan.

2009 Maybach Landaulet

The Maybach brand is made up of three closely related ultraluxury sedans: the regular Type 57, the extended-length Type 62 and the extended-length Type 62 Landaulet.

The Landaulet uses a rare vehicle body style in which the back half of the car can act as a convertible. Landaulets are supposed to be chauffeur-driven and have enclosed areas for the driver. The extended-length Type 62 Landaulet follows this formula.

It takes nearly five months to construct and deliver Maybachs, which are sold through Mercedes-Benz dealerships.

The Landaulet's exterior size and sporty look are based on the Type 62 S. Landaulet buyers have the option of customizing the exterior paint job to anything they can think of. The vehicle is 242.7 inches long overall, with a 150.7-inch wheelbase and a 78-inch width.

The Landaulet features reinforced D-pillars that protect rear passengers when the roof is down. The black soft-top can open and close in under 20 seconds. The top doesn't inhibit cargo space when down. A slim wind deflector automatically rises at speeds above 40 mph.

Rear interior appointments are more luxurious than the driver's compartment. Rear headrests are also slightly larger in the Landaulet to reduce wind noise when the top is open.

Mercedes-Benz redesigned its entry-level C-Class sedan last year, offering new styling reminiscent of the automaker's S-Class flagship. Prime competitors include the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Infiniti G35.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

My wife and I bought this car in Apex silver with all the bells and whistles, which stickered at 41k. This car will get from 0-60 in around 5 seconds and absolutly devour corners. The steering is razor sharp and with AWD even wet weather will not phase the handling or braking abilities. I like the Recaro seats, but wish they had more adjustments to help find the best driving position, and the interior is pretty much rental car grade Lancer aside from the satnav system and seats. The 6-speed paddle shifted auto/man transmission takes a little getting used to, but is nearly flawless when it comes to sporty driving. The best part is that in everday driving you can leave it in auto mode and it shifts pretty much the same as the automatic in any other car. The Brembo brakes are spot on and will just about cause a nose bleed if you hit them really hard, the drawback to all of that stopping ability is they throw off a great deal of brake dust on to the cool looking BBS wheels. The Rockford Fosgate stereo sounds pretty good but lacks the clarity and stage I would have hoped for in a system at this price. The satnav also is OK but not really on par for a car in this league. The only other issue I have with the car is the giant rear wing. I know the rally cars have wings like this and it adds to the persona of the car, but I feel like a 18 year old ricer every time I look at it! The worst part is the way it cuts right through the middle of your rearview mirror. If I could replace it with a wing that was 3-4" shorter I would be thrilled. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this car and everytime I drive it I remember why I love cars, this IS a drivers car in every sense of the word!

Hummer's New Global Headquarters to be in Michigan

Although its new owners will be Chinese, Hummer will still retain its headquarters in the U.S. - and in Michigan, no less.

If the sale of Hummer to the Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company is finalized, the brand will invest up to $9.4 million to create a new global headquarters in southeastern Michigan. The facility will be responsible for all design, engineering, product planning, and marketing of Hummer vehicles, and will create approximately 941 new jobs, including 300 with the company itself.

Hummer had previously eyed locations in both South Carolina and Tennessee, but a $20.6-million tax credit was offered to the automaker by the State of Michigan. The credit will be applied over a span of 10 years.

No details on an exact location for the new Hummer HQ have been revealed, but the company is reportedly eyeing locations in both Auburn Hills and Detroit.

GM Offers New Deals on Trucks, SUVs, Crossovers

Even though General Motors canned its annual September truck sales, shoppers looking for a deal on a new truck will want to visit dealers this fall. A new promotion launches today, and runs through November 2.

GM postponed its annual September sale in order to focus on its new “May The Best Car Win” ad campaign, and the 60-day money-back guarantee. Since that campaign is under way, GM’s truck sale begins now -- although each brand will receive its own advertising campaign.

Automotive News reports the Buick-GMC sales organization will offer an additional $1000 cash back on several different will offer an additional $1000 cash back on several 2010 pickups, SUVs, and crossovers. The smaller GMC Canyon, however, is the exception -- it’s only eligible for $500 cash back.

For Chevrolet vehicles, GM will offer buyers zero-percent financing for 60 months on all 2009 Silverado and Colorado pickups. We hear GM is also considering an additional $1000 cash back on the Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, and Silverado.

The new promotion is largely in response to Ford’s recent truck sale, but despite the marketing rhetoric, this isn’t a true “truck month” (cash back deals on the 2009 Malibu and Impala will also be offered). GM is reportedly keeping the nomenclature in place to entice those used to seeing an annual GM truck sale.”

Part of the reason for the sale is in response to Ford’s annual truck sale that still happened. By offering special financing on the trucks, GM is making it an official “truck month,” but purely for advertising as consumers are used to seeing an annual GM truck month.

“This is not a corporate wide truck month like you saw a year ago,” said GM spokesman John McDonald. “You’ll see some advertising. The ads will use the words ‘truck month,’ but it’s more of a competitive response.”

Ford Unveils 2011 Super Duty Pickups

It's hard to make Ford's Super Duty any bigger, bolder, or beefier, but the automaker did just that with its revised 2011 model.

Like the past few iterations of the Super Duty, the 2011 model’s exterior is largely derived from the truck launched in 1999. Ford’s designers have added an even more brash front fascia, with gigantic headlamps (reportedly the largest ever used on any Ford product), a chunkier front grille, and a massive blue oval logo. The previous model’s gargantuan fender vents are replaced by a new, “constrained” vent located above the beltline, but diesel models receive a massive Power Stroke emblem on the front doors.

If the size of that emblem doesn’t indicate how proud Ford is of its new diesel offering, we don’t know what will. The new 6.7-liter turbo-diesel V-8 was designed completely in-house, and uses a relatively innovative architecture that places the exhaust and turbocharger inboard the engine’s V. Ford claims that engine packaging, noise and vibration, and throttle response are all improved as a result.

Those who prefer a gas-fired motor can choose between either an improved version of the current 5.4-liter V-8, or an all-new 6.2-liter V-8. The latter, which will also appear in the extreme F-150 Raptor, is an new large-bore, short-stroke design, and uses variable cam timing, along with twin spark plugs at each cylinder. Like the 5.4-liter V-8 and the new Power Stroke, Ford isn’t revealing output figures, but says peak horsepower will arrive at a “modest” 5500 rpm.

Both the 6.2-liter gas and 6.7-liter diesel engines are available with Ford’s new six-speed “TorqShift” automatic transmission. Unlike competitor’s transmissions, the Ford gearbox can be shifted manually in addition to traditional automatic or “range-select” modes. Diesel models can also be fitted with an optional live PTO, which continues to send power to auxiliary equipment even if the truck isn’t moving.

Inside, changes are limited. A new flow-through center console now runs all the way up to the instrument panel, while every seat receives a lockable underseat storage compartment. Ford’s also added a nifty LCD screen to the gauge cluster, which allows drivers to view a range of information, and even preset trailer brake settings for different trailers. Ford’s also catering to the towing crowd by offering a fifth-wheel substructure, directly attached to the truck's frame, as a factory-installed option.

We expect to hear finalized power and pricing figures closer to when the new Super Duty reaches dealers in the spring of 2010.

Fernando Alonso Officially Replaces Raikkonen at Ferrari F1

“I’m very happy and very proud to become a Ferrari driver,” said Alonso. “Driving a single-seater for the Prancing Horse if everybody’s dream in this sport, and today I have the opportunity to make this dream come true. Above all, I want to thank Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who really wanted this 3 year contract.

“We already had an agreement this summer starting in 2011, but then, the last days the picture changed and we decided to [advance] my arrival in Maranello by one year. The years at Renault were fantastic: together, we won 4 world titles (2 drivers’ and 2 constructors’ championships), and until this day, 21 Grand Prixs.”

Part of the reason for Alonso’s move to Ferrari to originally happen in 2011 was to wait for the end of Raikkonen’s contract. In order to expedite the move, Ferrari is reportedly forced to pay Raikkonen’s salary for 2010, even though he won’t be part of the team.

Ferrari’s driver lineup for next year will consist of Alonso, the recovering Felipe Massa, and reserve driver Giancarlo Fisichella. Fisichella is currently filling in for Massa, who thankfully is recovering from his injuries quicker than expected. He has been turning a few laps in a kart race car in Brazil and will return to Maranello to begin racing on the Ferrari simulator.

Raikkonen has yet to confirm his plans for the 2010 season, but he is rumored to be moving back to McLaren, where he will race alongside current world champion Lewis Hamilton. Renault announced it will unveil its 2010 driver lineup next week. Current BMW driver Robert Kubica is rumored to be taking Alonso’s place on the team.

Next-Generation Nissan Micra Renderings Released

Nissan's Micra subcompact may not be sold in North America, but that doesn't mean it isn't global. The next-generation Micra, previewed by these sketches, will be sold in no fewer than 150 countries.

These sketches show a Micra as looking rather toned and rakish, a stark contrast to the current car's cute-as-a-button design ethic. The result is rather attractive, if not still somewhat quirky.
Nissan plans on launching the Micra in Thailand next March, and will eventually do the same in Europe in the fall of 2010. Although the car has long been built in England for European consumption, it is rumored the car will be built instead in India, allowing the British facility to assemble the Nissan Leaf EV.

While GM is making us live with the Cobalt until at least 2011, GM launched the Delta platform replacement in South Korea a year before Europe will get the car and at least two years before the U.S. does.

The Chevy Cruze (as it will be called elsewhere) launches as the Daewoo Lacetti Premier with the 140 hp, 1.6-liter engine shown at the Paris Motor Show. The engine reportedly gets more than 40 mpg highway thanks to a six-speed automatic transmission. While we won't be seeing the Cruze for several years, this should at least give a realistic preview of the fuel economy it can achieve and continue to make Americans jealous as the rest of the world gets superior next-generation vehicles years before they come to the U.S.

GM Dealerships Demand More Vehicles

Coming off the summer's cash for clunkers blitz, GM dealers are scrambling to keep their inventories at proper levels. The dealers have asked for up to four times more vehicles than the automaker planned on producing.

For example, dealers have asked for 30,000 Chevrolet Equinoxes, while the initial plans were only for 8000 to be built. "We have very little excess inventory, we're at record lows right now, and we're ramping up production." Tom Stephens, GM's head of global product development, told the Detroit News.

The added demand not only came from the recent government program, but also the new 60-day guarantee that went into action Monday. "Showroom traffic is getting better and consumer confidence is improving," said Stephens

Not all of the requested vehicles will necessarily be built. The requests do, however, give the automaker a good idea of the current demand.

Cadillac Converj: Destined for Production?

The Cadillac Converj concept wowed everyone at least year's North American International Auto Show with its sleek design and shocking sensibility. With the Converj, GM could feasibly spread the development cost of the Voltec powertrain across two brands and reap higher profit margins by sticking the technology in a svelte coupe with a Caddy badge. The most recent speculation had the project shelved as recently as last spring, but it may be on again at the urgings of none other than Bob Lutz.

According to BusinessWeek, the Converj concept was vetoed last spring because of internal opposition from executives and the U.S. government. Former GM North America President Troy Clark and Former Cadillac-Hummer-Saab chief Mark McNabb both disliked the idea of an electric car for Cadillac.

Their objections were echoed by the U.S. Treasury Department's auto task force. With the government seeking to minimize its role in GM, coupled with the departures of Clark and McNabb, BusinessWeek says the idea is gaining traction again.

Citing three sources "familiar with GM's planning," BusinessWeek says Lutz and others inside the company are once again trying to find a way to build the car. The general reasoning for the push is that the Converj would help Cadillac's image as a technology leader. Although at this point, if the car is approved for production, it wouldn't hit the market until at least 2014.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is scheduled to launch late next year. It will be consumers' first taste of GM's Voltec technology, but hopefully not the last. If the launch goes well and the Volt can prove the Detroit automaker's extended-range electric system is viable, it may go a long way toward convincing the remaining executive opposition that the Converj is worthy of development and production.

Will Bugatti Reveal a 1350-hp Veyron at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show?

In celebration of the company's 100th birthday, there is a rumor that Bugatti is bringing a 1350 -hp version of the Veyron, supposedly called the "Centenaire Edition," to the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Never mind a few periods of dormancy since the company started in 1909, a Veyron with that kind of power heals all wounds.

Bugatti is no stranger to special edition versions of their super car, but this could be a bit more than the typical paint-and-trim job. If the rumors are true, that massive quad-turbocharged W-16 engine will pump out another 350 ponies, allowing the car to reach speeds of up to 261 mph. Increasing the top speed could put the Veyron back on top of the SSc Ultimate Aero and the Maxximus G-Force as the world's fastest production car.

In less than a week, we'll know for certain as to how Bugatti plans to celebrate its centennial. For now, all we can do is hope it chooses something like this...

BMW to Re-introduce Four-Cylinder Engines in U.S.

Automakers are planning to use smaller displacement engines to meet increasing fuel economy standards and BMW is no exception. BMW is planning to bring four-cylinder engines back to the U.S. in the next-generation 3-series by 2012.

BMW has not offered a four-cylinder model in the U.S. since 1999, but in 2012, we will see a four-cylinder 3-series make a resurgence on our shores equipped with twin-turbochargers like the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder.

Jim O’Donnell, CEO of BMW North America, said that BMW will be able to reach U.S. fuel economy standards before 2015 by re-introducing four-cylinders to the U.S. The fuel economy standard O’Donnell is referring to is the 35.5 mpg average fuel economy standard set to take effect in 2016, with a 5 percent increase per year beginning in 2012.

In addition to adding four-cylinders to the 3-series, BMW is considering adding four-cylinder gasoline engines to the 1-series and its X1 and X3 crossovers in the U.S. BMW already offers both four-cylinder gasoline and diesel versions of the 1- and 3-series and X1 and X3 crossovers.

“We see potentially a significant market that could get to 100,000 four-cylinder engines in the U.S.,” said O’Donnell.

More Audi Diesels Headed to the United States....For a Price

More Audi diesels are headed to these shores in the near future. However, a hefty premium will accompany them.

"There is a very, very high level of investment, and nobody today knows if the return will come," Audi CEO Rupert Stadler told Automotive News.

Audi would like to see around 25 percent of its U.S. sales made up by diesels. The Audi Q7 diesel is currently surpassing that target, with a 35 percent take rate. If this trend continues, the German automaker may see better results than hoped.

The real test, though, will be what happens when Audi ceases to subsidize the extra cost of these vehicles.

Aston Martin Cygnet: Aston Builds A Minicar?

If the clay model shown above looks anything like a Toyota iQ, there's a good reason for it. Aston Martin's latest concept, the Cygnet, is based heavily on Toyota's Smart ForTwo fighter.

Indeed, from this photograph of an early clay model, it seems much of the iQ's design remains untouched. Aston designers are largely playing with the Toyota's front fascia, adding the brand's traditional grille, hood scoops, and an aggressive front fascia.

Given its legacy and portfolio, we wouldn't expect Aston to play in the microcar segment, but the firm believes the Cygnet could appeal to Aston buyers. Like a dinghy or tender on a yacht, a DB9 owner could use a Cygnet for urban commuting, while the sports car could be reserved for open roads and long trips. We imagine there's a second reason behind the Cygnet: If placed in production, it would help improve Aston Martin's overall emission and fuel economy averages.

“Now is the right time for Aston Martin to take this bold first step,” said CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez. “Much work is still required, but I am confident that this project could become reality in the not to distant future.”

Alfa Romeo Reveals 170-hp MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde

Tradition may hold that a four-leaf clover is a sign of good luck, but if it’s found on an Alfa Romeo, it’s usually sign of great power. Such is the case with the new Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde, which will debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show.

Although the Quadrifoglio Verde may not be as wild as the MiTo GTA concept shown at the 2009 Geneva motor show, it is the hottest version of Alfa’s small hatchback to reach production. A 170-hp version of Fiat’s new 1.4-liter MultiAir I-4 is squeezed between the front fenders, which helps propel the little three-door from 0-62 mph in just over 7 seconds. The Quadrifolgio also uses Fiat’s new six-speed dual-clutch gearbox as well as a dynamic suspension system, which allows drivers to choose the firmness of the electronic dampers.

These changes are hardly noticeable to bystanders, however, so Alfa sets the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde apart from its siblings with a unique bumper fascia, side skirts, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Though European consumers will be able to buy the car early next year, we’ve heard Fiat is still mulling over the decision to bring the MiTo range – including this model -- to North America.

Acura NSX On-Again as 370Z Competitor?

Unfortunately for those hoping to see a Honda-built alternative to the Nissan GT-R emerge within the next few years, the rumored Acura NSX is still dead - at least in the form of an exotic sports car.

Speaking with Car and Driver, John Watts, the senior manager of product development for the Honda luxury brand, said the NSX as planned was "too high a halo," but a scaled-down version of the NSX is still a prospect.

"For it to be fully effective, it couldn't be too far removed" from Honda's other products, he said. In an automotive world that has become highly focused on fuel efficiency, Honda probably couldn't afford the negative green cred - let alone the high development price tag - of a high-performance car to compete with the GT-R.

In all likelihood, an Acura sports car would compete with a car like the Nissan Z. Sad as it is that we may not see a V-10 NSX anytime soon, the silver lining is that we may still see a new sports car out of Honda yet.

Roush Readies 2010 Mustang Stage 3 and 540RH

Roush has just announced a pair of 2010 Mustangs with 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque each. Those are a huge improvement over the stock numbers of 315 and 325, respectively.

The 225 hp and 185 lb.-ft. increases come from the signature Roush supercharger. Stronger internals and lowered compression ratio (9.8 down to 8.6) help keep the engine in one piece.

Roush continues to amaze us with its Stage 3 version. Based on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT, the Stage 3 is loaded with improvements. Upgrades include a new exhaust, 14-inch front rotors with four-piston calipers, optional 20-inch rims and an array of body components including a new grille.

Interior enhancements include embroidered Jack Roush signature leather seats, illuminated sill plates, and an engraved badge with the car's serial number.

The Stage 3 will be offered in a limited supply of 103 examples with a price tag of $59,945.

The Roush 540RH is the sleeper model of the two. Sharing the same power numbers as the Stage 3, the 540RH will be less likely to get you pulled over for looks alone. The 540RH contains the same suspension and engine modifications as the Stage 3 at a somewhat more reasonable price of $46,145.

If you are interested, now would be a good time to visit your local Ford dealership. The cars will begin shipping in October.
